Nāʻālehu has been immersed in the Hawaiian community throughout his life.
He writes from Hōkūleʻa: “We often use the canoe metaphor and that idea of seeking a destination on a distant horizon to illustrate the process that will carry on through a constitutional convention. My grandmother passionately reminded us what it was like to live in the shadow of the overthrow, to bear witness to that inequality in her own 'āina hānau. Now I find myself writing from the deck of an actual canoe having sailed far from that memory of hurt and anguish that she kept close into one of strength and conviction. The metaphor of journey is no longer rooted in myth, rather, this vessel and this process will bring us to the actual 'āina of our kuleana.
It took us more than a century to get to this place. We must now make critical choices to set the direction for our people, and come together to finish work that was started so many years ago. We must not fear to do our best, for though the wisdom of our ancestors guide us, it is ours alone to protect and further our rights, our beloved institutions, our 'āina, our dignity, and a way forward to rule and live side by side in Hawai'i Nei."
