Personal statement:
“This election is a choice about what kind of nation we will be. That’s why I’m in this race – to join you in transforming our people.” – Kauanoe Batangan Kauanoe is motivated by the hope of ushering forth a new Hawaiian era of restored self-governance. He understands that the recent arrests of activists atop Mauna Kea and Haleakala highlight the need for change in the role Hawaiians play in public affairs. He wants to take up the unfinished business of hoʻoulu i ka lahui, and join you in building a better future. As a former aide to Senator Akaka and Congresswoman Gabbard, he has unique experience fostering social and economic development in Hawaiʻi. His service has taught him that self-determination will only be achieved through the collective efforts of an engaged citizenry, so he is currently leading a new effort to provide ʻoiwi leaders an opportunity to shape society through legislative appointments. Kauanoe graduated as the valedictorian of his class at Kamehameha Schools Maui. He is an alumnus of Stanford University, current student at Columbia University, fellow in the First Nations Futures Program, and member of the Royal Order of Kamehameha I.
