National Abolition Hall of Fame and Museum (NAHOF)

Install a lift at the Smithfield Community Center that provides second-floor access to the Museum

With an extra $8,500, we could:

Get to the second floor! A straight incline platform lift can be installed at the Smithfield Community Center (the Town of Smithfield municipal building and the home of the National Abolition Hall of Fame and Museum) to provide access to an assembly hall with a performance stage, exhibits, collections, and an office. The lift regards the inclusion mission of NAHOF by assuring that persons are not excluded from the Hall of Fame and museum because of the challenge of stairs.

This project will engage community members in CNY's rich culture, heritage and natural resources by:

Providing access for citizens to a municipal assembly hall, and providing access for the area public and volunteers to conferences, programs, lectures, exhibits, and catered events at the heritage site. This historic building was the site of the inaugural meeting of the New York State Anti-Slavery Society in 1835. Due to community efforts in the past two decades that have saved, restored, and interpreted the building, the site is recognized as a national cultural treasure.
