Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum

Construct an interactive model of a dry dock and sluiceway once used on the historic Erie Canal

With an extra $8,500, we could:

Construct and interpret an interactive model of our 3 bay dry dock and sluiceway illustrating water flow and 19th canal technology. Included in the display: the operation of 2 types of dry dock gates, how boats used the dry dock for repairs, how water entered and exited bays and how the sluiceway "flushes" the on site outhouse. The creation of interpretive displays and a coordinating education program teaching science, technology, engineering and math using the model would be crucial.

This project will engage community members in CNY's rich culture, heritage and natural resources by:

Providing a hands-on model of the only recovered historic dry dock in N.Y. and displaying the technology of the Erie Canal--the "thru-way" and the "internet" of its day. The Landing's 3 bay dry dock complex (which repaired and built canal boats) illustrates the hustle and bustle of a busy wayside stop on the Erie. An interactive display allows active learning while conveying engineering concepts and the unique history of our region. A STEM educational program marries history, science and math.
